Abstract

Background: Clinical practice is a critical component of nursing education, facilitating the connection between theoretical learning and real-world application. However, nursing students encounter numerous challenges during this transition that can significantly affect their professional development. Inadequate clinical supervision, insufficient resources, and a disconnect between classroom instruction and clinical experience are among the barriers identified in the literature.

Objective: This study aims to explore the experiences, challenges, and obstacles nursing students face in clinical practice, focusing on their adjustment to clinical environments, the impact of clinical supervision, and the relationship between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Methods: A descriptive qualitative research design was employed, involving 25-30 second, third, and fourth-year nursing students from Benazir College of Nursing, Female College of Nursing, and Male College of Nursing in Larkana, Pakistan. Data collection was conducted over four months using semi-structured focus groups and interviews. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify patterns and themes in participants' experiences, supported by NVivo software for data organization.

Results: The analysis revealed four major themes: approaches to patient interaction, challenges in the clinical environment, the necessity for effective clinical supervision, and the significant gap between theoretical knowledge and its practical application. Participants emphasized a lack of clinical instructors and resources, which hindered their ability to gain hands-on experience and develop professional confidence.

Conclusion: The findings highlight critical gaps in clinical education that adversely affect nursing students' learning experiences. To enhance student confidence and competence in clinical practice, the study recommends appointing dedicated clinical instructors, improving resource allocation, and fostering a supportive learning environment that integrates theoretical and practical training more effectively. Addressing these issues is vital to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and clinical practice, ultimately improving the quality of nursing education.
